A train derailed in Uttar Pradesh earlier today injuring more than 40 passengers.

As many as 15 coaches of the 12987 Sealdah-Ajmer Express train derailed while crossing a bridge over a dry canal near Kanpur at 5.20am Wednesday.

Eight passengers are Down Townin a critical state, said senior police officer Zaki Ahmed. Two of the coaches fell into the canal bed, the officer added.

Rescue operations are underway, and all the passengers have been brought out of the derailed coach, Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said.

"Immediate medical help being provided to the injured. Mobilized resources, directed all concerned to ensure rescue and relief," said Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.

Last month, nearly 150 people died and 200 were injured after the Indore-Patna Express train derailed from the track near Kanpur.

Many experts had blamed the country’s poor and outdated infrastructure for the train crash. With 11,000 trains running every day, carrying over 20 million people, India has the world's fourth largest railway system.
